Majel Barrett Roddenberry (1932 – 2008)
December 18, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Majel Barrett Roddenberry, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s widow and a fixture of nearly every incarnation of the space travel franchise, died on Thursday. She was 76. Roddenberry, who suffered from leukemia, died at home in Bel Air, Calif., according to a spokesperson.
Every Star Trek fan had their favorite Majel role and mine was always Nurse Chapel from the original series, though her portrayal as Betazoid ambassador Lwaxana Troi on The Next Generation was a must see.
Much like her late husband, Gene Roddenberry, Majel was as much a fan as she was an icon in the sci-fi community and she will be missed. While we’ll no longer get to see her gorgeous eyes gazing back at us, Majel’s voice will be with us once again in the upcoming reboot of the franchise, in which she one last time performed the voice of the Enterprise computer. She had reportedly just completed her voiceover work on the movie when she passed away.

Come see me at Macworld!

Ok, so I probably won’t actually make it this year, but two of my pieces will. Along with all the other great artwork adorning the walls of the ‘Made on a Mac’ art gallery, large format print editions of Urban Angel (Suzume No Namida) and Bonneville will be making the scene. If you’re planning on making the trip, be sure to keep an eye out for them and send me a pic from your iPhone damnit!

Forest J. Ackerman (1916-2008)

The Associated Press reported that Forest J. Ackerman passed away in his Los Angeles home on Thursday, December 4, 2008. He had congestive heart failure and was preparing for the end at home where he could be happy, comfortable and surrounded by his friends. He was 92.
Forrest was an American collector of science fiction books and movie memorabilia and a science fiction fan. Ackerman, known as “Forry” or “4e” or “4SJ”, was influential not only in the formation, organization, and spread of science fiction fandom, but had long also been a key figure in the wider cultural acceptance of science fiction as a literary, art and film genre.
Ackerman is also remembered as the editor-writer of the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, as well as for being an occasional author, actor, producer (Vampirella), and literary agent.
You’re Sci-Fi’s No. 1 Fanboy 4e, the original superfan and truly one of a kind. You’ll be dearly missed by those who knew you and the community at large.
