Farewell Stan Winston
June 15, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Stanley Winston (April 7, 1946 – June 15, 2008) Special-effects wizard Stan Winston, who won Oscars for his work in Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park, died Sunday at his home in Malibu, California. He was 62.
Most recently, Stan Winston Studio devised the suits featured in Iron Man. The movie’s director, Jon Favreau, said Winston brought a “childlike enthusiasm” to his craft.
“He was the king of integrating practical effects with CGI, never losing his relevance in an ever-changing industry,” Favreau said in a statement. “I am proud to have worked with him and we were looking forward to future collaborations. I knew that he was struggling, but I had no idea that he would be gone so soon. Hollywood has lost a shining star.”
In the wake of Winston’s death following a seven-year battle against multiple myeloma cancer, Aliens producer Anne Hurd told Variety: “Stan Winston never looked at anything as a problem. It was always an opportunity. I never saw him defeatist, regardless of what may have happened. And he had an incredible childlike passion for films and for makeup effects and animatronics.”
Stan was a true innovator and one of the best in business and will be greatly missed - RIP.

I added a new piece to the galleries this morning and a new gallery as this one kicks off Gallery 4.0. The piece is titled Return to Base and is a Star Wars composition I’ve had kicking around since the early Bryce days. After coming across it on one of my Macs, I decided to finally finish it using some higher quality models than the original and of course my favorite application, Vue 6 Infinite. Check it out>
Update: City at Night Lights for Vue
May 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Ok, so this really isn’t an update, more of a usage note, as I realized I left out a simple step for users of the Vue version to get the best results from these materials. Due to the way the window regions of the Dystopia City Blocks are mapped, you should double click the materials, choose advance editor and under the color & alpha tab, set the mapping mode to ‘faces’ and then adjust the map size to get the look you desire. This will yield the effect shown above instead of the little tiny lights you get by just adding them to your blocks.
The materials work on primitives and most other objects without any need for the above edits, so no worries there. Oh, and if you don’t already have them, I suggest picking them up right here>
