Don S. Davis: 1942-2008

Don S. Davis as General George S. Hammond in the SGCBest known to many for his work on the long running Stargate series as Major General George Hammond, base commander and father figure to many of the show’s characters, Don S. Davis had along and prolithic career that ranged from the role of Scully’s father on the X-Files to Major Briggs on Twin Peaks and all kinds of roles in between. For fans of Stargate, the loss of Don and knowing that Major General George Hammond will no longer be making those wonderful guest appearances on Stargate Atlantis really makes it all seem so real. Fans will get one last ride though as Don reprises his role in the upcoming Stargate: Continuum movie, set to be released just one month from today. You will be missed Don.

Farewell Stan Winston

Stan Winston Passes AwayStanley Winston (April 7, 1946 – June 15, 2008) Special-effects wizard Stan Winston, who won Oscars for his work in Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park, died Sunday at his home in Malibu, California. He was 62.

Most recently, Stan Winston Studio devised the suits featured in Iron Man. The movie’s director, Jon Favreau, said Winston brought a “childlike enthusiasm” to his craft.

“He was the king of integrating practical effects with CGI, never losing his relevance in an ever-changing industry,” Favreau said in a statement. “I am proud to have worked with him and we were looking forward to future collaborations. I knew that he was struggling, but I had no idea that he would be gone so soon. Hollywood has lost a shining star.”

In the wake of Winston’s death following a seven-year battle against multiple myeloma cancer, Aliens producer Anne Hurd told Variety: “Stan Winston never looked at anything as a problem. It was always an opportunity. I never saw him defeatist, regardless of what may have happened. And he had an incredible childlike passion for films and for makeup effects and animatronics.”

Stan was a true innovator and one of the best in business and will be greatly missed - RIP.
